The 2018 Nissan Altima is at the Starting Line

The Nissan Altima, who was introduced in 2012 and got a redesign in 2016, is about to enter his new model year. As it became one of the better selling models of the brand with the nice interior, reasonable pricing and quite powerful engines for the class, there won’t be much of a change about that.

Nissan updated the original model with its 2016MY and the 2018MY is about to carry the more successful formula on to compete with the Mazda 6 and Chevrolet Malibu.

Entering the market

The new model is based on a new modular front-wheel drive platform that also can be found in the European company brothers from Mercedes and Renault. With the use of lighter materials and a lower manufacturing price, Nissan should be able to direct some resources into the developing nicer interior and a more appealing look for upcoming models. We assume that the car will launch in the second half of 2017 but as Nissan hasn’t confirmed anything yet, this is just an assumption.

Engine Line-up

With the CO2 emissions regulations in mind, we might look forward to a new engine line-up but it’s unlikely that Nissan will drop its 2.5 liter I4 180 hp entry level engine and just extends the options to a 1.6 liter I4 Turbo from the Mercedes/ Renault cooperation with around 200 hp. The 3.5 liter V6 on the other hand is more likely to be extended by either a downgraded variant of the new 3.0 liter V6 Twin Turbo from the Infiniti Q50 or a modified 2.0 liter I4 Turbo of the same model but a hybrid powertrain is also thinkable of as these drivetrains are better accepted in the US than in the rest of the world. In any case it is almost certain to say that the CVT gearbox will be upgraded and together with the new and refined engines the mpg rating will improve. We might also look forward to the introduction of an AWD system option for the first time in the Altima’s lineup. For other markets, such as Europe or china it is almost certain that they can look forward to even smaller engines like the 0.9 liter I3 Turbo from Renault with 115 hp or 1.2 I4 Turbo with 130 hp for the lower Range Models.

Specs, Costs and Features

Considering the former price increases, the new Altima might start around $23,000 for the Base Model and up to $32,000 for the top range SV model with a, typical Japanese, small optional equipment options, to make it comparable and competitive with the rivals in the segment. You will also find the S, SL and SR models in between with different combinations of engines and options. Some notable Features are premium leather options, intuitive Touchscreen with navigation and a backup camera as well as panoramic sunroof, 2-zone climate control, keyless entry, premium audio and much more. With all the new options, Nissan has to show, what they can provide in the new Maxima. We are looking forward to see the result.
